I have been asked whether I use a die cutting machine when I prepare my quilt kits because of the accuracy of my cuts. No, I do not and I take nothing away from those who do use them.
Die cutting tools are certainly a quick and easy way to prepare your block pieces for your quilting project.
While I personally hand cut all of my quilting fabrics for my kits with a rotary cutter, I can see where die cutting would be a time saver and the variety of dies available make for a wider range of quilt block design options.
There are some factors however, that prevent me from considering using one for my kits.
- I prefer rotary cutting my quilting pieces to ensure accuracy and for quality control. That way when I cut my strips, I can check the fabric for any flaws. If it isn't good enough to go in one of my quilts, it won't go in yours either. I take pride in my cutting techniques and ensuring the quality of my kits is a priority for me.
- I prefer to fussy cut my pieces. I have never been a fan of focus pieces not being centered or having cut off parts of the fabrics pattern. I may "waste" more fabric that way, but I think fussy cutting my fabrics, presents a more pleasing and finished looking quilt design.
So, I will continue using the rotary cutter for my quilt blocks kits for the above reasons. I am a stickler for making certain that my quilt pieces are of excellent quality and I am leery that I would lose some of that control by using a machine to die cut my quilt kits. The time saving and ease of use benefits, do not outweigh my concerns of providing a quality product for my customers.
Stuck in my ways...uhmm, yep, I guess so!
